I have been assessing safety at the Department of Energy for the past 32 years, and in 2006 I began leading the Department of Energy's Voluntary Protection Program.
I have earned a reputation for integrity, honesty, and an out-of-the-box approach that values alternative solutions to difficult problems and conflict resolution.
Over my career, I have assessed companies that manage and operate former and current nuclear weapons production sites and national laboratories, helping them understand and implement the expectations set by DOE for safe operations. I have come to appreciate the benefits of safety in high-hazard operations. I have earned the respect of Senior Managers, Middle Managers and Supervisors, Workers, and Union Members by observing operations, connecting seemingly unrelated conditions, identifying opportunities for improvement, and establishing trust.

My experience in the DOE and NNSA complex are equally applicable to other industries. Improvements begin by first recognizing opportunities. People often see their objective and the direct path to achieving it. But that path may harbor unnecessary and easily avoidable risks. And a fresh pair of eyes often sees things that have become part of the background.
